FIELDWORK Design & Architecture

The Bluff House

FIELDWORK designed the house and interiors, designed and fabricated the majority of the furniture (and walnut entry door) and selected everything from the linens to the cutlery & artwork, all within the context and constraints of a suburban development.

Inspired by the simple gabled farm buildings in the area, the house and garage of the Bluff House were designed and organized to create a protected and private outdoor courtyard and living space.

The main living spaces and master suite are oriented facing south towards the courtyard to provide a seamless indoor/outdoor flow, take advantage of natural daylighting, provide views to Vancouver Lake and the Columbia River, and to capture breezes on the bluff coming off of the lake in the summer.

The courtyard space was designed to provide year-round outdoor living with a covered deck with a flat screen TV and overhead gas heaters, a built-in grill area with a sink and refrigerator, and a fire pit.

Moving through the house, the spaces of the house transition from the more public living spaces near the street and entry to the more private bedroom wing at the back of the site.

The interior material palette was designed to be timeless and restrained with dark walnut floors and cabinets in the living spaces and bedrooms, and walnut cabinets, stone tile and full height glass shower walls in the bathrooms.
