We took down the wall between the kitchen and family room. Moved the sink to the island, all new kitchen, custom hood, new stone fireplace, new everything! We even added a sound proof wall behind the custom hood so the attached neighbors could not hear anything, then beefed up the second floor joist for added support, and added a steel beam below. The original builder did a minimal job.
