The Fish Camp

The Fish Camp is a waterfront custom home on Useppa Island in Charlotte Harbor. A fun and whisical home, the Fish Camp was built to honor the historic stilt homes that dot the waters of Charlotte Harbor and would serve as dormitories for commercial fishermen during an era where boats only ran several miles offshore and fish were netted by hand. The feeling evoked when arriving at the Fish Camp is that you are 1,000 miles away, detached from the constant of time. There are no cars on the island and the lush mangroves and tropical native vegetation envelops you like the breeze of salty air. The fact is, you are in a special place, a place that’s been inhabited since 4,500BC and who’s only access is by boat or barge, a place that time seems to have slowed down for. Building on a remote island presents unique building challenges and unusual feats of ingenuity. The vision was to build a family compound, a place where they could unplug and retreat, a place where you could be nothing but in the present. Architect, Paul Konstant, designed the structure with a warm, inviting front elevation enticing visitors to stop by for a spell on the front porch only to discover the expansive master living area inside followed by a cascading row of individual cottages laddering towards the shoreline. Every detail was taken into consideration to create a seamless integration of the exterior and the interior, including pocketing all the doors into the walls ensuring an uninterrupted flow to the outside. Staying true to Florida’s heritage was defining in our careful selection of materials. Over 22,000 linear feet of Florida southern yellow pine covers the walls and ceilings, complimenting the spirit of the architecture.
