After several years having a lakeside vacation home in Tahoe, our client needed a change. She loved her current getaway and living next to the water, but she wanted to travel, to move around but be in place. She wanted the World. The World is “the largest private residential yacht on Earth.” It continuously moves, only docking for three to four days at a time. Suites are no larger than 3000 square feet and have a set number of windows. We rebelled against the white-on-white or nautical theme one might expect of a ship traveling the world—not suitable for a pioneering biotech bon vivante. Yet the space needed to be down-to-earth and feel like home, like a beloved summerhouse, because our client is also a proud matriarch who loves to host her mom and daughters and grandchildren. We emphasized light and air to take advantage of the ever-changing sea glimmer outside. In such a small space, we used welcoming forms and rounded edges no one would be afraid to bump into. ‍

Since the yacht always moves, we had to install in parts: · Montreal, Canada—initial installation of furniture · Boston, United States—finishing of installation · Vienna, Austria—review of full remodeling on land per design specifications · Cadiz, Spain—full remodel install on the boat; every three years the World stops for one month of general maintenance, allowing time for larger projects · Cape Town, South Africa—final photography
