Tile flooring falls into two categories, Man Made (ceramic or porcelain) or Natural Stone (travertine, granite, marble, slate). Ceramic and porcelain tiles are kiln-fired and stained clay squares and best serve in areas that see a lot of moisture or standing water; basements, baths, kitchens.

The length of firing and clay composition determine the placement and/or usage of the tile, meaning some tiles are more suited for heavy-traffic than others. Once secured to the floor, tile becomes quite durable and is easy to clean.

Ensuring your tile is laid on a firm, level base will increase the chance that they resistant chips and cracks. Tile design comes in all color and sizes and many prefabricated mesh borders can add accent to any tile installation backsplash or floor layout. Large format tiles, or tiles that exceed 1'x1' have increased in popularity as floor cover.
