This renovation for the newly retired homeowners needed to provide an environment that was both highly functional, allowing for both of them to comfortably work in the kitchen at the same time, and allow for a great entertainment space.

As a former CFO of a large company the owner by nature was very professional and organized and had these same high expectations of both design and construction.

There were many design challenges as we embarked on the mission of updating this 30 year old never before renovated home. A few of those challenges included the confines of the 8' ceilings, existing soffits, an existing dropped beam and a wall with a small door opening between the kitchen and family room.

The owner had a demanding and exact list of program requirements:

· Create a highly functional chefs kitchen while also creating an inviting entertainment space

· Introduce as much natural light as possible

· Increase the feel of the size of the space without increasing the footprint

· Connect the family room with the kitchen environment

Addressing the first program goal was easy by introducing them to Thermador’s solutions. As frequent entertainers they needed solutions that allowed them to accomplish a lot of cooking of different items all at the same time. Their Pro Harmony range and Professional Series Combination Ovens did just that.

Their other program requirements were accomplished by removing the boxed bay window and replacing it with an over-sized arched window giving the appearance of higher ceilings and flooding the room with natural light. All of the soffits were removed, the dropped beam was replaced with a flush mounted beam and the wall separating the kitchen and living area was removed and replaced with a half wall topped with a woodwork cap and apron detail.
