Tudor Revival
This project is an addition to and renovation of a 1920’s Tudor revival home in Chevy Chase, DC, for a couple and their three children. Foregoing the trend of a separate family room, the family preferred to make use of the existing living and dining rooms, fully utilizing the first floor. The kitchen, being the hub of their home, they sought to expand the space and improve its connection to the rear garden and alley.
Our intention was to design a contextual addition, which while providing the desired interior spaces of a new kitchen, mudroom entry, butler’s pantry, and new master suite would also improve the rear façade and connection to the garden. To facilitate this, the existing living room, dining room, and hall were opened to the glassy kitchen addition. In the kitchen wall cabinets were minimized in order to maximize glazing and improve the visual connection to the garden. The former kitchen space was transformed into a mudroom entrance, allowing day-to-day access from the alley, as well as a butler’s pantry to provide additional storage and connect the existing dining room to the new kitchen. A modest expansion of the second floor provided the space needed to convert two small bedrooms into a new master suite. On the exterior, this minor addition was designed to pair with an existing gable and balance the composition of the rear façade.
