The Resiliency and Timelessness of good residential design.
Good residential design can often have a time-less-ness to it. In 1976 I designed this residence for a dentist and his family, carefully siting this open plan rustic contemporary home on a wooded lot, as close as possible to the lake edge. The plan was conceived to invite broad water views and natural wooded surroundings into the home from every possible angle- both horizontally and vertically. The large roof structure, originally enhanced by rustic stained wood siding to blend with its surroundings, provided privacy from the street, embracing a low-key focal point entry, while carefully masking the dramatic living spaces within and exposing wide glass-framed views of the water once inside.
Fast-forward 40 years, and I was approached by a builder friend of mine and owner of Stoker Construction, who, with his wife, had recently purchased this home. Retrieving the original plans from my archives, I was asked to consult with my friends, as they embarked on a sensitive remodeling to update and make this unique residence their home.
The result was a skillful re-setting of the original design tenets by the new owners, updating, reinvigorating and lovingly restoring this structure, to fully embrace its original style and create a warm and inviting home for yet another generation.
