Westside Kitchen, Bath, and Basement Remodel

This family of five had outgrown the functionality of their 1955 main floor kitchen & bathroom, as well as the funky and lackluster basement, and decided it was well past time to optimize those spaces. Designed by Lucy Johnson & remodeled by Mighty House, they found the sweet spot of beauty, function, and healthy solutions.

Rockwool Insulation in External Walls
Rockwool insulation was added to all exterior walls that were opened and in need of insulation. Rockwool is made primarily from spun basalt rock and a recycled steel manufacturing byproduct called slag. Though a high energy manufacturing process, its carbon footprint is substantially less than fiberglass and is a highly superior product in heat retention, moisture resistance, fire resistance, and sound proofing capabilities. While sheep’s wool and hemp wool have lower carbon footprints, rockwool can be a more economical choice of sustainable insulation options.

Flexible Spaces
The “office” is more aptly referred to as a multi-functional space. From working out in the little nook by the furnance to hosting guests on the fold-up Murphy bed and more!

Innovative Smart Design in the Kitchen
Installing this lift-up door on the appliance cabinet at counter hieght makes for easy transfer to the adjacent counters – and less wear and tear on bodies and the cabinetry.

Leaving major appliances in their existing locations reduces labor needs as well as lessens the amount of rough-in and trim-out work needed and thus also reduces material consumption on all levels.

Locally Produced Custom Cabinetry
The custom cabinetry was made locally by Cabinetworks, a cabinet company in Seattle, WA. Choosing a local manufacturer greatly reduces the transportation carbon footprint and keeps money within the community we live within. Being less ‘factory’-minded, many custom cabinet shops such as Cabinetworks focus on waste production and methods that are healthy and safe for them and their employees.

Healthy Flooring Choices
Wool carpet – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It is renewable, highly durable, biodegradable, resists bacterial growth, a good insulator, sound resistant, and naturally fire resistant. They serve as a natural filter, trapping allergens and removing them from the air you’re breathing and because it doesn’t off–gas, it has no effect on indoor air quality.

Marmoleum – Marmoleum is a a natural linoleum made from linseed oil and mixed with other natural products on a jute backing. It is also naturally resistant to bacterial growth, making it an extremely hygienic flooring choice.

Cork flooring – A rapidly renewable resource, hypo-allergic, resistant to water, and a natural fire retardant. Cork has the added benefit of absorbing sound and being a thermal insulator. All resulting in quieter rooms, warmer floors, and fantastic indoor air quality.
