White Farm House
A couple from NYC was looking for a weekend home for their family of 5 within 1 to 1.5 hours away from the city. They wanted a country weekend getaway that was comfortable and cozy in contrast to their modern NYC apartment. They found a dated, nondescript house in Garrison, NY, that needed a transformation.
River Architects was commissioned to convert the confined, small house into a spacious open plan with new kitchen, rear entry, master suite, and screened porch.
By modifying one closet and adding a sliding door, a clever guest bedroom was carved out above the stair. One room with limited views was turned into a fun, bedroom for the daughter with a high vaulted ceiling, a reading nook, and a house-shaped closet. River Architects proposed the high contrast finishes of wood against white walls and ceilings. The exposed wood beams in the Master Bedroom were made from a few fallen trees on the property. The Clients liked to describe them as the “beams that came from the garden”.
The builder, Tom Ptacek, played a major role in bringing out the warm touches with his high craftsmanship: turning brand new wood floor planks to look aged; transforming reclaimed wood from a water tank into barn doors; and creating new bedroom doors that appeared to have been there for a hundred years.
The most notable experience of this project was the harmonious, collaborative synergy between the Clients, the Builder, and the Architects.
