Hi Kellie, thanks for your kind words, this deck was built around the existing tree with the edges being cut once the boards were laid. You could do the same if you were to brace the edges of your cut. There would need to be a frame underneath to support the decking. If you wanted to do this with an existing deck you'd want to pull up the decking boards where you want to put the garden so you can install the sub frame. Hope this helps.

3. Tree-hugging deck. Custom fitting a deck around a tree is a wonderful way to integrate the deck farther into the yard. Consult an arborist before beginning work to be sure you allow enough room for the tree’s mature size.
