This one was hand woven and an odd dimension. But 24-30" beyond the edge of the chairs should be enough so that when one is seated they are still on the carpet

When you say satin on base...so you mean the baseboards or the wainscot below the "wall" - which is technically trim so I just want to clarify

I don't know if anyone has a feel for a "standard", but most of the time we work with 18" deep off of the wall. That would allow your recessed lighting to be centered in the soffit at 9" off of the wall.

I would consider this transitional style. The traditional part is the formal set up of the dining room, but the furnishings and finishes are contemporary; the chandelier, the drapery fabric, the clean lines on those chairs. Transitional bridges traditional with contemporary--beautifully.
