My first impression was the same as mmschwartz's; While I appreciate a big island's versatility, and the convenience of the pot filler, I couldn't see how functional this kitchen would be. Thankfully, there is another sink directly behind the camera, as shown from this angle:

Mike, I hope that a kitchen design company was able to get you closer to your dreams! However, I had a couple of thoughts that might be of interest to some.

I, too, like generous aisles and hallways. However, when you are remodeling (especially those lovely old homes) often you don't have the ability to reasonably replicate the spacious, generously proportioned living spaces we so often see here on HOUZZ. However, with a little creativity and sharing of ideas, you can recreate the feeling that these pictures present.

In the case of a 11'5" wide kitchen, here's how I would approach it: you can get by with 36" (rather than 39") walkways if congestion is not an issue with your household (small family, empty-nesters). Also, rather than having 24" cabinets on both walls, consider, using the example pictured and Ceemimi's assumptions, putting the sink on the range side of the 24" island and using 12" cabinets (floor to ceiling) along the right hand wall. This row of cabinets could be a combination of dish/storage cabinets with doors; a section for a wine rack, shelves for glasses, a 12" counter underneath with a veggie/bar sink, with the wine frig in the island behind you (or, if possible, "push" it the additional inches needed (12?) into the room backing up to this wall if it's a closet or laundry, etc.); another section with a 12" deep desk top for your laptop and cookbooks, and finally a section of 12" shelves for pretties or baskets. This would come in right under 11'5".

You could further "squeeze" in some additional aisle space by taking 3-6 inches off the island width. With a narrower island, you could put the sink either along the wall with the range and oven or against the wall at the end of the island (where the photographer is standing). BTW, in this picture the sink shown is a second sink in the kitchen! What a treat! Also this island looks to be 10-12' long. You could break it into two 3' or 4' lengths with a 3' aisle (or a generous 4') between them to visually open the space. Also, if you don't already have high ceilings, consider raising or vaulting them to visually open up the space (isn't this kitchen's vaulting wonderful? Love the red shutters!).

I love this kitchen and eating area, however updating an existing home with the space limitations that come with them requires a lot of out-of-the-box thinking! Hope someone finds these thoughts useful.

This kitchen looks great with the granite countertops. I love how much space you have to work with when cooking meals. My only complaint is the fact that the sink is on the other side of the island from the oven and stove. I wonder if it would get frustrating walking around it over and over. http://www.stone4kitchen.com

This seems long enough that it should have been two islands with a walkway between to access the sink from the stove and ovens. I am sure the photo makes this looks more elongated, though.

I looked at both of those granites when shopping for our home. I chose River White and it looks exactly like this granite. The linear movement is a bit different from slab to slab, and deposits of quartz flakes and river rock looking lines weave through the gray linear design. The spots/dots of maroon can be less on some slabs if you shop around. The other granite had splotches of yellow that randomly appeared in the slabs I looked at; and seemed to have more brown in the contrast than the gray of River White.

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Ivon Street Studio added this to Kitchen Countertops: Granite for Incredible Longevity
What to Know About Granite CountertopsThe basics: Granite is a natural stone, composed of at least 20 percent quartz as well as mica and feldspar. Colors choices span the rainbow, from a monochromatic slab to bold patterns. Countertop finish options include:Polished: The most common finish; it’s mirror-like, stands up well to stains and is the least porousHoned: A matte finish that is typically not recommended, as it can stain and scratch more easilyBrushed/satin: Similar to a honed finish, though less matte in appearance and better performingLeather: More polished than a honed or matte finish, but with a little textureFlamed/thermal: Created by running a flame over the slab surface; has a rough, textured appearance and a varying surface depthAntique: Has a brushed, dull appearance that is slightly texturedCost: $50 to $100 or more per square foot installed.
Vanessa Brunner added this to Your Guide to 15 Popular Kitchen Countertop Materials
Granite Kitchen CountersThere are plenty of reasons granite counters are so popular — this natural stone has plenty of character, with unique grains, colors and customizable finishes. When properly sealed, it’s one of the most durable options out there. While it can cost as low as $50 per square foot installed, prices can go up quickly with more exotic slabs and difficult installations. Guide: Pros and cons of granite counters
Rachel Grace added this to Kitchen Sinks: Enameled Cast Iron for Attractive Durability
Maintenance: The polished enamel surface is nonporous, making for a stain resistant and easy-to-clean sink. A thorough rinsing and wipe-down with a soft cloth is recommended after each use. Avoid abrasive cleaners and tools, which can dull or scratch the finish.
Erin Carlyle added this to From the Pros: 8 Reasons Kitchen Renovations Go Over Budget
The countertop material used in this project by Echelon Custom Homes in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, is River White granite. 3. Countertops. The cost for countertops ranges widely. Plastic laminate countertops are relatively affordable at $8 to $20 per square foot. Quartz and granite typically run much higher, anywhere from $50 to $120 per square foot. “If you haven’t purchased a countertop in 20 years and you go from a laminate to a Cambria or a quartz or a granite,” be sure you look into the cost of the various options, advises Judy Kimble, marketing manager at Gerhard’s Kitchen & Bath Store in Madison, Wisconsin.Read more about 15 popular countertop materials
