We are buying a new home under construction, the plans call for a 12’ x 3’ deep x 96”h pantry.. only problem is they did not think it through. The opening is at one end and just an actually narrow doorway!
We are going to change the configuration after we move in.
My question is, given the configuration and wanting a similar pantry as pictured, with pocket doors, what would work without losing space on the ends. It is too narrow with shelving to walk into obviously. How much space is needed to be useful?? And, how big could the pocket door be without being in the way??
I appreciate any help, thank you!

First of all if your home is under construction, change it before you move in, if possible, its cheaper in the end. You want the pocket door (or french if there is room, or a barn door) to be centered if possible (don't know what else is within the pantry surroundings) on the long wall. the depth of 3" is fine, its the doorway that will be critical for your space layout.

I would use gypsum drywall for finishing. RC channels only work where there is a min. 9 cm cavity behind it, walls or ceilings. best, --david

The size of the pantry is about 8'Wx40"Deep, the cost is around $5500. and the lead time is 3-4 weeks. I have an electrician I would recommend if you do not have one.

No, kitchen and dining room don't have to be the same color. Even if they're connected, you can paint an accent wall in your dining room. Or consider a broad, vertical accent stripe, say 6 feet wide running up wall behind dining table. Think bold, such as black or lime or turquoise. Could be interesting!

If you could send a photo to best understand the shape of your pantry is, that would be most helpful. As you are looking into the pantry (though you single door, what does the back wall measure, and what is the ceiling height? If that back wall slopes, what are the height differences from left ot right? How deep are the side walls? Do the same for sdie walls as the back.
