Reclaimed Wood Custom Fireplace Rustic Living Room, Chicago

After years of ignoring its original warehouse aesthetic, due to a developer’s ‘apartmentizing’ of the building, this 2,400 square foot, two-story loft has been rehabilitated to show off its industrial roots. Layers of paint and drywall have been removed revealing the original timber beams and masonry walls while accommodating two bedrooms, master suite, and a lofty, open living space at the ground floor. We wanted to avoid the lifeless feeling usually associated with industrial lofts by giving the space a warm but rustic aesthetic that we think best represented the original loft building.

What type of insert is this? - I absolutely love what you have done here with the fireplace and want to reface our terrible brick one and do this with reclaimed wood. I have had trouble finding the appropriate insert and dealing with the codes etc. Questions: 1). Is this gas or wood burning insert? 2) Which insert is it (make & model if possible)? 3) What codes are required (i.e. distance from insert to combustible material (i.e. the wood). Thanks so much. I am really really trying to do this.

The first thing you need to know when remodeling around a fireplace is the local code requirements. Failure to meet code could invalidate your fire insurance (if there ever was a fire).

Fire Hazard - Is there any type of fire hazards having the wood upto the fire place? any recommendations? We were considering doing something similar but with the wood slats upto the gas fire place.

Was told I needed a 14" clearance for wood surround above a gas insert.
Is that not really needed? There are metal faceplates that will be around insert over the wood.
Though it looks like yours are slightly set in. It looks cleaner.

This particular fireplace model has a fixed glass screen, so there would be no chance to open it, thus no fire threat. There are different building codes in different regions (and varying interpretations of those codes by inspectors), but typically the clearance is only required in front of a fireplace in the form of a hearth. The fireplace manufacturer also may have some recommendations in their literature about install requirements. Hope that helps.

I found a product from Stikwood, it's reclaimed barnwood that is planed to 3/16" and is peel in stick! Waiting for our order to be delivered!

We carry some nice 3/8" thick material that is easy to use, and can be finished or left unfinished. It's similar looking to Stikwood, but without the adhesive. It would be glued and occasionally face nailed. But easy to work with on walls and ceilings.
Also, there are some pretty effective fire retardant products with low VOC and little impact on visuals. They are sprayed on after installation and 2 coats absorbs in and you have class A rating. It's worth a look.

Is there an insulating barrier beneath the wood to keep it from the dry heat surrounding the Gas insert? If so, what is it?

Hi Dawn, Our installer provided a few samples based on what we were looking for. We actually found something we liked in a retail store and had them match it. Any installer should be able to make a few for you to chose from. Matching this exactly will be tough since our floor was 80 years old and yours is new red oak. Nonetheless, get some samples and pick the one you like!

Moss is correct. A good site finisher should be able to get you very close to this look. Several different samples should be expected.

The fireplace surround was part of a larger project in this space, so its hard to put an exact cost on it. If this were stand alone project I would estimate around $3K to demo the existing surround and construct this new one. Not including the price of the fireplace insert itself, of course.

Thanks for the estimate. Not expensive. It's on my dream list.

The masonry is real, of course. The building is an old warehouse.
