Hi guinness09, this is either a marble nor a travertine. It is classified as an Oolitic Limestone (with a double 'o') it is virtually indestructible, and no amount of acidic foods or house cleaning chemicals may harm it even after centuries of ware and tare. Hi, I'm building a very similar kitchen. It has very darks floors, white cabinets with a dark island. I have decided to use chrome for the cabinet pulls and hinges, faucets etc. But the doors, windows & closets hardware(handles and hinges) throughout the house are in ORB. How do I tie that in to the chrome fittings in the kitchen and bathroom. Would it be better to do all the light fittings in ORB or can I do chrome. So the light fixtures in the entire house have to be in one finish to maintain a cohesive look? What about in the bathrooms? I have chrome for all the fixtures and pulls. Again the door hardware is ORB. I'm afraid the ORB will look a bit disjointed in the entire scheme. I'd really appreciate your input.

It's a shame that the picture is a bit too small. The 11'-0" is from cabinet to cabinet and door casing is an additional 5-1/2" wide. There is another section of this kitchen that has the tall cabinets including the refrigerator and double ovens.

Wow. Lovely kitchen. If you want to change something....start small? Maybe a different tile on the backsplash? Or, if you want to spend more, a different countertop? I do think that if the island was darker than the light cabinets, that might add some visual interest. I love your current kitchen cabinet color though. :)

With the overall palette of the room the medium toned wood top is what pulls all of the finishes together - both on the decorative hardware and the finish of the counter stools. If you were to change these elements a lighter wood top might work!

Are there any more pictures of this space? Showing where the refrigerator is? What is the depth of this space? I think we only have 16 feet then the ceiling goes up to 14 feet in the family room. This room looks deeper - 20 feet? It is really outstanding, and with one son in a wheelchair the openness would be glorious!

The cabinets on the seating side are 12" deep, and yes, in this particular kitchen they are hinging doors with adjustable shelves. You could certainly have the shelves pullout, it's all up to your needs! And yes of course, a granite top would work!

Yes, the three lights are centered over the island and on the middle window.....I suggest consulting a good lighting designer to help you design the optimal lighting plan for your home. Sometimes, lighting store offer this service as psrt of buying their product!

To achieve perfect symmetry, take the measurement of the length of the island, and find the mid point. Then find the midpoint from the center and one end of the island. That will give you the first location. Repeat for the other side.
