"Concealed appliances will add even more of a sense of visual continuity to the kitchen design," says Susan Serra, who designed this kitchen. Serra also adds a cautionary note: "Compare white appliances one to another, especially if they are different brands. The whites could be quite a bit different." Furthermore, she advises to note where the white appliances are situated within the design and determine if they need to be as invisible as possible (like a dishwasher) or if they will be a focal point (like a hood).

9. Choose contemporary furnishings. What you choose to fill your kitchen has a huge impact on its overall aesthetic. Instead of going with traditional table and chairs, look for something with a modern appeal. It may seem counterintuitive, but your space will become enlivened.

Don't replace appliances in good condition. If your white or black kitchen appliances are newish and in good condition, don't worry about replacing them with trendy stainless steel versions. If your appliances are worn or old, however, that's another story.
