The property the clients purchased is in a small gated development and came with a storm water retention basin as means to store storm water runoff for the entire development. This was a key site element that led to many design decisions.

The client was looking for a well developed space to feel equally comfortable privately or when entertaining . A multi-terraced patio with careful attention to a sense of scale was developed that is comfortable for groups of 1 to 100 or more.

This site was engineered to collect run off from the development and send it through a narrow front yard to a retention basin on this property. A natural stream was constructed by cutting a channel, adding boulders and lining the sides with sod stapled to a geo grid on well packed clay.

Low stone walls, bluestone walks, limestone coping and formal plants arranged in an informal way unite to create a buffer from the street while offering axial views from the dining table and the front doorway.

Drawing from the classic lines and estate feel of the home, we created a natural setting using a variety of classic, old fashioned plant material planted in a loose, natural mix that would be reminiscent of an established estate in the countryside.

Tranquil water flows under New England fieldstone masonry bridges. Pennsylvania boulders are set randomly throughout the channel as the stream cascades down to a water fall at the pond stimulating senses of sight and sound as it aerates the pond.

At the water’s edge, this dry-laid patio is situated in a lawn panel under a new grove of elms. It offers a quaint space to relax and listen to the surrounding nature. Walls and plantings help give a sense of enclosure in the middle of a large panel.

The main entertaining patio is tucked into the surrounding reclaimed brick walls of the house. The finished patio is a mixture of formal and country estate with the use of dimensional bluestone was well as outcropping steps into the rear yard

The entertaining terrace is separated from the master bedroom with a brick wall that matches the detailing on the home. This serves double purpose, as a backdrop to the grill center and seclusion for the small seating area off the master bedroom.

The multi-levels and recessed planting beds help break up the large scale of the terrace while the plantings beyond draw the eye out to the yard. The double radius of bluestone banding helps give sophisticated but subtle detailing.

New York fieldstone steps were cut into the dimensional bluestone terrace to serve as a transition down to the 35,000 sq. ft. lawn panel beyond. Sedum was planted in the fieldstone to soften the edges and facilitate the transition area.

The approach to the front door takes visitors over a stone bridge to a view beyond the lawn panel of the classically developed pond featuring a diverse mixture of hawthorn, weeping willow, viburnums and many other native plantings.

The colors of fall come alive in this natural setting. Ducks, frogs and turtles naturally gravitate to the pond as bird feeders dot the landscape and the blue chairs beacon the clients for a late afternoon bottle of wine enjoying the timeless landscape.

The informally planted beds show themselves vividly in winter; the sight is spectacular indeed and reinforces the intent of a classic rural estate. The pond freezes, leaves drop, but the plant structure and placement remains to show off this natural estate.
