To anchor the room and compliment the overhead facade the island cabinetry was stained a deep mahogany finish over cherry wood.

The large scale cherry wood crown molding echos the grand appeal of the high ceilings and architectural features of the house. It also adds a wonderful furniture like finish to the room.The new white window trim frames the landscape views for the perfect art.

The fine balance of color and texture in an open plan is crucial. Mixing materials such as wood, stone, glass and metal gives many opportunities for contrast in tone, texture and sheen. Using none to the extreme is the key.

While romancing the stone, we chose a bold black veined granite for the eating bar and were lucky enough to find a companion that looks like the natural background for the rest of the counters. They look like they were sliced from the same mountain but they are from two completely different series.

Here we used a remnant of the kitchen bar stone as an inset in the back splash of the fireplace for an artful feature. With this open plan it helped continue the kitchen design into the family area.

The metallic and glass tiles of the back splash contrast beautifully with the granite counters and seedy glass in the cabinet doors. They help illuminate and otherwise shadowed area.

We made an extended niche to house our clients beloved baker's rack. It helped incorporate and showcase this special piece of furniture into the cabinet plan.To the right is a built in desk and message center and behind the niche is the laundry room.

The new niche and lighting now frames and showcases the baker's rack at the same time protecting it from the busy family traffic.

The new location of the cook-top allowed us to add wonderful large drawers for handy pan and lid storage. The is another waste pullout to the right with a paneled front. With a sink and all tools now in reach, the cook has much less traveling to do.

Among the many amenities is a handy waste cylinder inset into the island counter top behind the sink. This allows easy prep waste disposal and just lifts out for easy cleaning.

Outside of the busy cooking area are under cabinet refrigerator drawers for additional beverage and snack storage. To the left is a pull out recycle bin. The fronts are custom paneled to appear as regular drawers.

We added Tilt outs under the sink to hold sponges and other cleaning supplies. A full extension Lazy Susan provides maximum storage use of corner cabinet depth.

This photo shows the overall floor plan view. We relocated all appliances, island and hood to create a more efficient work space. New task lighting was also added. An add on niche was built to shelter and showcase the clients baker's rack. The family room fireplace facade was redesigned.
