Acacia Residence

A full house renovation to an historic stone house in one of Ottawa's oldest neighbourhoods. The interior was completely remodeled with all finished and fixtures being updated. A screened porch addition was added to the north side and a large kitchen/entry and maser bedroom suite was added to the west/rear side. The original stone house was kept completely intact and is featured prominently in the interior.

The addition on the rear of the existing stone house is tucked in behind the original house. The style and material choice is a contrast to the original stone house. The centuries old white pine tree was preserved by cantilevering the structure over the root mass of the tree.

The cabinets in the butlers pantry, off of the dining room, are made of recycled rosewood. The rosewood was from wall panels that were removed from a 1950's office building that was being renovated. The cabinet makers at "The Woodturner" refinished the panels and gave them a like new patina.

The kitchen is in an addition to the rear of the original stone house. The exterior stone wall was left completely intact and was enveloped by the addition.

This cozy porch has exposed solid B.C. fir beams that support the ceiling which is clad in clear red cedar. The walls are also clad in cedar. The heated floor is clad in Champlain limestone slabs as is the fireplace surround and the large hearth block.

The working side of the laundry room features a stacked Miele washer and dryer. The cabinetry is makore and the floor is tundra marble.

The laundry room has ample storage cabinets made of heavily figured makore wood. The countertops are quartz.

This storage unit has lacquered center shelves. The two lacquered units on the right and left hold shelves for DVDs while the lower unit, made of sapele - a type of mahogany, holds A/V equipment. The entire unit conceals two large vertical duct runs.

The solid ipe wood bench is in high contrast to the pale coloured materials of the steam shower. Hexagonal tundra marble is used on the floor with the same marble in slab format on the rear wall. The other walls and ceiling are clad in both undulating and flat surfaced glazed ceramic.

This storage cabinet in the rear entry is made of big-leaf curly maple with rosewood details. The two drawers, cantilevered out on the right end, feature wood slides and contrasting dovetail joints. It is anchored to the exterior stone wall of the original house.

The bush-hammered limestone stairs at the rear entry complement the ocean green polished slate which has a slight grey hue to it. The cool colour material palette on the floor is offset by the warm maple and rosewood cabinets. The craftsmanship that is displayed in these cabinets is exceptional.

The windows in the original house were removed where they looked into the new addition and were replaced with quarter cut sapele mahogany display cases.

The fireplace in the living room was built into the space of the original wood burning fireplace. The ribbon fireplace is surrounded by honed black granite and sapele mahogany.

The new side door is at the joint between the new structure and the original stone house.

Exceptional detail at the point where the new house meets the original stone wall. Each piece of siding was scribed to the stone wall for a perfect fit.

Two storage sheds were constructed at the rear of the property. One is for garden tools and supplies and the other is for bicycles.
