Accessory | Gray Magazine Mirror Project 2014

Commissioned project to design and fabricate a mirror to be auctioned for charity. The concept behind the mirror installation was the natural textures of west coast forests. Using long planks of Western red cedar in close proximity mimics the density of the rain forest, the mirror inserted between the wood works to blur the scale of the planks and plays with the perception of depth.

The process known as shou sugi ban, the Japanese technique of burning the surface of the cedar, was used to mimic the dark texture and color of the cedar trees when saturated with water and masked in fog, a common scene among the rain forests in the Pacific Northwest.

The antique mirror further emulates the subdued and translucent qualities of this region. Just as you may pause in the forest and reflect on your thoughts, the installation has provoking quotes which can only be seen by stopping to look within the mirror, or the ‘in between’ spaces.
