Custom built by Country Club Homes Inc. and designed by Wadia Associates, this turn of the century shingle style home in New Canaan combines classic architectural elements with state of the art energy efficient products to create a home for today’s discerning consumer.

The home sits high on a hill, and was sited to command a sweeping view of the property. The use of turrets, cupolas and spire’s, brackets, patterned shingles and interesting windows add to its visual impact. A porte-cochere takes you from the gated front circle to the rear parking area of the home.

A flickering gas lantern is at the top of the main entry stairs and front entrance. The entry foyer includes details such as recessed wall paneling, antique oak herringbone flooring and a custom hand crafted handrail and spindles of the main staircase, which add to the foyers charm. The formal powder room, with travertine marble flooring, has a mahogany furniture piece vanity with honed marble top and antique brass fixtures. Two large coat closets provide for guests.

The formal living room is accessed from the foyer, and has a painted wood coffered ceiling and chair rail height flat panel wainscoting. A custom built stained white oak fireplace mantle has a multi layered two toned, honed marble surround, and a large bay window area is home to the owner’s grand piano.

Entrance to the formal dining room from the front foyer is through a barreled vaulted entry. The room is warm and welcoming with a coffered beam ceiling, and custom wallpaper above the flat panel wainscoting. Adjacent to the dining room is both the butler’s pantry and the wine cellar. A wall of French doors and windows open to a covered porch, which is next to the screened in porch with a field stone fireplace for year round entertaining.

The butler’s pantry has custom built stained alder cabinetry with wire mesh grilles. Aged copper fixtures with an integrated sink and a quilted aged copper back splash are both functional and formal. The butler’s pantry offers plenty of storage, and includes a top of the line coffer maker and beverage cooler by Miele and Sub Zero respectively. The climate controlled mahogany wine closet features a French door, with custom designed racks and tumbled marble floor.

The kitchen and breakfast room is beautifully detailed in a way reminiscent of a bygone era. Honed carrera marble counter tops are combined with custom built hand made cabinetry with a hand painted distressed finish. Antique glass fronts the upper cabinets. Above the Shaw porcelain farm sink are casement glass windows that look out onto the backyard and patio. Custom polished nickel light fixtures and stained alder beam ceilings compliment the state of the art stainless steel appliances including a Miele coffee maker, glass fronted Sub Zero refrigerator, Viking gas range and Gaggenau dishwasher.

The well appointed breakfast room has a richly stained antique white oak plank flooring which is carried through from the kitchen. The cross beamed ceiling and bead board inlay lead your eye to the top of custom built-in hand painted hutch. The fireplace has a custom built wood mantle and hand made tile surround, with a gas wrought iron coal basket insert. An office adjacent to the kitchen has a custom built computer desk and cabinetry, and over looks the backyard, an added convenience for today’s busy mom.

The family room has a dramatic beamed cathedral ceilings and a custom chandelier. This room has great flow, and can be accessed from the formal living room, the kitchen or from the backyard patio through a set of large French doors. The main focus of this room is the oversized fireplace which has a custom wood mantle with honed marble surrounding a fieldstone base with log storage. Added to this is a custom built T.V with Auton lift that neatly folds away when not in use.

Convenient to both the family room and the formal living room is the wet bar and study. The wet bar boasts custom built stained mahogany with antique glass upper doors and oil rubbed bronze hardware. A honed marble top with a hammered copper sink are highlighted with under mount lighting. The ceiling has a painted coffer ceiling. Custom built Mahogany cabinetry boasts all the storage and organizational space a busy man needs in a relatively small space.

An informal powder room hosts a painted furniture piece vanity with honed marble flooring, and is easily accessible from the breakfast room and butler pantry area.

Located a few steps down from the main staircase and foyer, and accessed from either the outdoors courtyard or the heated three car garage is. The room has ¾ height large bead board wainscoting. The custom built in storage includes a hinged storage bench, cubbies and a hanging closet, providing plenty of space to hang coats and organize the kids.

The main stairway leads you to the upper hallway foyer featuring flat panel wainscoting and a beamed ceiling. At one end of the hall is the large master bedroom. A custom built wood fireplace mantel with hand made tile surround and a hand painted textured ceiling make this room warm and romantic. It also offers a sitting room with sliding pocket doors allowing one to watch T.V or read while not bothering ones partner.

The master bedroom’s his and hers walk-in closet provides plenty of custom built cabinetry with antique glass inserts in the cabinet uppers. All cabinetry is hand painted including an island with a honed marble top and bank of drawers below.

Across from the master closet is the master bath. Generous in space and spa like in comfort, it features a beautiful blue and white Mosaic tile rug pattern on the floor and again on the ceiling over the Waterworks whirlpool tub. The tub is surrounded by windows that overlook a private, forested back yard. A recessed his and her vanity with honed marble top and a built in hamper and storage add to the spacious feel. The master bath also features a steam shower with built in tile mirror, and radiant heated floors.

There are three additional family bedrooms with antique width oak plank flooring and ensuite baths with custom vanities. The second floor family room commands a sweeping view over the main family room and has a colonnade of fluted columns with a custom made mahogany handrail and spiral fluted spindles.

This beautifully designed shingle style home encompasses not only great design but the latest in energy saving technology.
