AGING IN PLACE GRACEFULLY - Architecture / Interior Design

This first-floor renovation took the everyday functions that happened across three floors (basement, first floor and second floor), and consolidated them on one floor, for single level living for couple of active empty nesters in their 70’s. With some “outside of the box” planning solutions, PDC was able to move the laundry from the basement, and bedroom from the second floor, to the first floor for single level living without adding any square footage. The under-utilized living room was repositioned as the kitchen, which opens up to family room to form continuous space for cooking, dining and living. The former kitchen was repositioned as a new laundry/mudroom, and added space in the expanded bathroom to accommodate a curbless shower with a bench.
The finishes were updated to incorporate the clients’ DYI projects over the 50 years they have lived in the house, accomplishments that they are proud of. All new soft seating was added and incorporated with owner’s other furnishings for a seamless look. Repositioned cabinets from the former kitchen in the new laundry/mudroom gave added function and storage, for a fraction of the cost of new cabinets.
This revitalized floor plan added ease of living and greatly increased property value, with an ever-popular open floor plan and third bedroom.
