Antique Barn

An antique onion barn in farm country had a bad renovation, with a dark faux Tuscan kitchen. But so much there to work with! We enlarged windows, added a window, revealed interior stone walls. The space was transformed to an open kitchen plan, well lit and logically laid out, easily accommodating a large family with multiple cooks. This kitchen really is the heart of the home.

A full view of this welcoming room in an antique onion barn. The island in the foreground is for wash up and seating. The pine island was adapted from a chest the homeowner inherited. Great efforts were made to make an all-new island look like an old pine chest.

A side view of the AGA wall. The original AGA range is left on at all times, its three ovens set at standard temperatures: warming, baking and roasting. Those who have cooked on one forever remember it.

Behind the AGA wall is a small pantry, with a Sub Zero Pro fridge inside. The unit is artfully placed so that it can be seen from the main room. A fridge like this is not to be hidden away. Its rugged looks work well with the other elements in the room.

The main wash-up area faces out into the courtyard. The farm sink is fitted with an industrial style faucet, with reclaimed wood shelves above.

The second island faces out into the garden and pool. A second sink with dishwasher are needed for this busy family. Seating is on the back side of the island, with outlets carefully placed for laptops. A long window seat is behind the island.

This open kitchen is part of larger family room, anchored by a great stone fireplace. This room tells a story about a family that cooks great food, loves a roaring fire and an armchair to curl up with a good book.
