During our renovation, we added shelves for small objects by using the space between the wall studs (wood structure) in a former exterior wall. The wood used is paint grade poplar.

Informal photo after kitchen was completed (stove has since been replaced). Cabinets are custom cherry plywood (flush overlay) with plastic laminate counter and cherry edge. The backsplash is green marble mosaic tile with a small cherry edge. Appliances and hardware are stainless steel.
