Back around

This small backyard has been divided into a series of very different living spaces while maintaining a strong cohesive feeling. How? Using a curve, the spaces form a sequence of rooms: starting with the wood dining deck at the same level as the kitchen covered a curved iron pergola and vines to create shelter from the brutal south west sun; a few steps down is the lvingroom terrace and used as an over flow from the main dining area, a low slate seating wall defines the outter edge of the curved area; a few more steps down is the open green lawn, the stone wall continues the curve around the back of the yard, rich varied plantings fill in every corner and space.

As the stone wall wraps around the back of the garden, an interruption permits access to the recycled garden shed. With a new coat of paint it melts into the background. The russian olive and hostas were selected specifically to pick up the blue and silver tones in the slate.

Behind the retaining wall a plethora of plants creat a mini jungle. Hosta, vinca, clematis and ferns co exist comfortably.

The paved stone terrace is defined by a stone seat wall and is an over flow area for guests during special occasions. The Calamgrostis brachytricha was selected for it's voluptuous flowsy character to contrast the tight architectural lines.

Vines were planter to break the lines of the curving wall. A diverse combination of plants were used to both compliemnt the stone colour( bluish hostas ) and contrast the slate( red japanese maple)

The silver russian olive tree overhangs the back lawn creating a shady spot away from the afternoon sun. The silver of the tree harmonises with the blue gray slate wall and sets off the emerald green of the lawn.

The combination of textures and colours between the horizontality of the wood fence, the cool grays, the rustic slate and frothy golden grass was calculated. The Calamgrostis brachytricha grass was selected for it's voluptuous flowsy character to contrast the tight architectural lines.
