Beaver Dam
The location is one of a kind on arguably the premiere street in Vail. The homesite is located along Gore Creek and has long and dramatic views up and down the stream corridor. The existing home design did not take advantage of the creek views, access or setting. Many of the rooms lacked appropriate volume and were broken into many small spaces. The primary rooms in the existing home are on the North side and there was no priority put on Southern light being allowed to enter these spaces. The forms of the exterior were very chopped up with colliding roofs that required valleys which resulted in roof leaks. The existing exterior materials included stone that was not chosen or applied with thought toward timelessness and the majority of surfaces were covered in stucco that was prone to water infiltration.
The new design dramatically opened up the views and access to the creek with taller sweeping roofs and larger areas of glass. The primary wall paralleling the creek was angled to accentuate the views to and up the creek. The entire main level plan was opened up to allow spaces to flow from one to the next so that every space had a view of the creek. The new roof design, while simplifying and unifying the overall design, also allowed dramatic Southern light into the depths of even the most northerly rooms. Every exterior material was changed to a palette of warm colored stone at the base with a mixture of reclaimed European wood and copper panel siding above. The entire roof is visible from the road, so the worn and faded zinc roof was replaced with standing seam copper. Solar PV panels were also added to the home to help offset energy consumption.
Combination of traditional timber and exposed blued steel structure and details. The interior was gutted almost completely and will feature primarily warm colored wood and stone floors with plaster walls and wood ceilings. Most of the home will have no casing around doors or windows or base on the walls to create a simpler and more modern appearance.
