Before & After Snaps
Transforming properties is both a challenge and an opportunity. Sometimes, a subtle updating is all that is required. Sometimes, an owner discovers that years of mismanagement have reduced a retirement bungalow to an un-sellable ruin.
These "Before and After" projects required me to establish a new architectural vision appropriate to the context and use of the property, John James' specialty. The functionality of the living space is improved and exteriors transformed. In two of these examples, interior design included extensive renovation.
In the Mid-Century Oaks property, interior design was focused on playing up the period features and furnishing the property to resonate with the period without becoming a museum.
The stucco bungalow had fallen into disrepair, a ruin neither suitable for the owner's planned retirement living nor sell-able in a hot market. The owner invested significantly and the result was a property that pulled up the neighbourhood while providing a beautiful retirement suite as well as a revenue suite to pay back the cost of renovations.
The 1970s split-level was gutted to produce a contemporary, open space home designed around items collected through travel in Asia and Europe. Designed for efficient use of space and cleverly fit features, this home never fails to impress yet is very clearly a space for inspired living.
