Display challenge

This unique piece was designed by John James O'Brien, Garden Oaks Fine Accommodation. Manufacture of the unit was by Island Custom Cabinetry--our supplier of choice for custom storage and shelving.

Country: Canada

The design brief: create a code compliant safety barrier beside an open stairwell that does not block light and air flow and does not look like a railing.

Display challenge

In construction, dutch oak veneer is applied and clamped.

Tension bands maintain a consistent pressure to hold the unit together while the veneer sets.

The unit rests on a padded lift and is held in place with a compression bolt arrangement so protect the 8" Dutch planed white oak floors.

Each side weighs about 150 lbs, so placing and securing the unit without damaging the new floors was a challenge!

In place, with collectibles partially loaded. The 4" gaps between display towers meet code requirements for child safety while permitting air flow.

Display challenge

The display unit holds artifacts from travels around the globe and let's light through to the stairwell. A pair of antique kinari, 8' (2.5 meter) each, can be seen through the unit.
