Bethesda Residence

The project ultimately was a full house renovation, remodel and addition to a center hall, four square colonial. The project scope included a new modern kitchen with open spaces that allows for easy visual access to the entire ground floor. The second floor scope of work included an addition over the existing garage for a new master bedroom with the conversion of an unused guest room to allow for the creation of a new master bathroom as well. Additional enhancements included the renovation and remodel of the original master bedroom and bathroom for the client’s daughter and the creation of new guest room.

The client expressed a great desire to create a modern home from a traditional colonial house. The needs were defined programmatically to create a new kitchen that would become the heart of the house as well as create a new master bedroom suite that represented the way they wanted to spend their private at home time.

We met the clients' needs by creating open functional spaces on the ground floor, flipping the dining room with the kitchen and opening up walls to create a loft like feel that allowed for an easy flow from space to space. The kitchen design created three distinct areas – one for cleaning, preparation and storage, another for cooking and eating and the third area for entertaining in the open family room space.

For the second floor, the client wanted to make use of an unused guest room that would have direct access to the addition over the garage. By doing this, the reorganization allowed for a new master bathroom suite, laundry room and closets in the old guest room and direct access to the addition which became the new master bedroom.

Through the process of reorganizing the first floor, the house was converted from a series of rooms to a sequence of open spaces that allow for visual connection to each and every space on the ground floor - from the entry hallway to the kitchen and family room. For the second floor, the goal was to create a private sanctuary. Here the conversion of the old guest room allowed for a transition zone that allowed for the client’s to move from the public realm to their own private oasis.

The initial scope called for a kitchen renovation and quickly grew into a total home renovation project and addition. What the clients once considered a transitional house has become the home of their dreams. The end result is a beautiful piece of architecture that is both modern and contextual. A home that serves the clients desire to have an intimate place for family and an open functional place for entertaining.
