Bound Together
CONTEMPORARY, COLORFUL, CONNECTED
What started as a 1900’s Craftsman-style Bungalow, was reimagined into an art-driven, urban and modern design through the creative use of architectural elements from our friends Brett Hautop and Jody Brown, along with contemporary furnishings customized with Scion fabrics. A modern addition was later introduced with the help of Joseph Sawyel, to capture additional space for the growing family. Our clients are busy parents of five kids, who wanted their home to feel “uncluttered and clean” for when life gets a little messy. They didn’t want to sacrifice style, luxury, their love for color, or any part of their full family life, so our team conceived an open concept floor plan with clean lines and a neutral foundation palette that bursts with energetic colors. Our vision was to create a space that is inviting, exciting, and a reflection of our client’s own style and culture—a space where they can live, work, and play.
Family is an important thread in everything our client does, so we regarded the use of lines throughout the space as a representation of the close bond the family shares. Steady angles, classic lines, and geometric shapes come together and work cohesively throughout the design. To further create a sense of connectivity throughout the large home, we mindfully associated adjoining spaces in creative ways such as custom, traffic-flow woodwork details within the hardwood floors with the help of our friends at Evan Lightner Studio. We achieved this by conscientiously blending in color, form, and function throughout the spaces, taking into consideration how each element works together holistically.
Throughout this renovated 1900’s Craftsman-style Bungalow, this family’s personality wasn’t overlooked. Each space possesses its own expression of texture and materials that give layered depth to the senses: both sight and touch. The dining room features a wavy, decorative wall tile which adds an elegant, dimensional impact on the space, creating a stunning visual effect. Built-in panels in the family room contribute to undeniable details found throughout the design, and diamond shaped veneer using Sycamore wood, custom designed by Tom Jackson Floors, accentuates the beauty of the grain. An adjustable artistic panel by Peter Lik is a sleek, clean way to conceal the TV in the living area. This creative solution allowed us to design a room that was incredibly functional, without sacrificing an ounce of beauty.
Pushing the boundaries of our imagination and use of materials, well-appointed appliances and features lend to the home’s innovative influence and performance. The kitchen features an accessible mosaic tile by Bo Taylor along the ceiling that’s complimented well by the 6” gold speckled backsplash, and extends down the wall splashing the interiors with a lively pattern and vibrant colors. Beautifully, simplistic woven light fixtures float above custom concrete countertops and Siematic kitchen cabinets, adding the perfect dose of artistry and texture to the room. To add more efficient storage and space, we added in Molteni & Co closet systems and pantry. The master bath was inspired by our client’s favorite vacation spot: Chicago. Taking cues from Chicago’s signature urban aesthetic and enviable interiors, we started with eye-catching furniture that’s rooted in a blend of architectural influences. A modern, luxury, handcrafted wood tub by NK Woodworking Design is the centerpiece of their completely open concept master bedroom and serves as a functional form of fine art.
