Located on a tree-lined street in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, this late 1800’s, 3-story brownstone had been held within a family for decades and with it, become in disrepair and desperate need of renovation. Underneath the magenta wall-to-wall carpet and layers of caked-on paint were beautiful inlaid floors and exquisite decorative woodwork that was carefully restored. Windows had decayed, leaving large gaping holes to the elements outside. The previous renovation in the 1980s had carved up the kitchen and bathrooms causing awkward circulation and dated finishes.

This gut renovation sought to sensitively restore historical details, enhancing the detailed inlaid wood, decorative plaster and wood mouldings of a different era. Modern kitchen and baths were introduced with clean details and more comfortable proportions, while respecting the historic conditions.
