burlingame residence
The original house had an insular character with each space separated from the other, unlike the typical Mid-Century Modern Ranch of that time. Our goal from the outset was to break this condition and allow the various “communal” spaces to flow and open up to each other while maintaining some degree of spatial definition. The “in-between” walls are removed and two service porches are enclosed thus creating a free flowing ‘L’ shaped living/dining/family room embracing the back courtyard with the kitchen set off, yet still open to these living spaces.
