Cambridge Mid-Century Modern

Circa 1950, Harvard University built a series of small jewel box homes to house faculty. The homes were eventually sold to private owners. One of the main goals for adding onto this classic home was to preserve the integrity of the mid-century modern aesthetic, re-interpreting the elements of the modern home 60 years later. Materials, massing and detailing play a large part in achieving this goal; by setting back the additions from the front face of the existing house, extending the horizontal roof eave to visually connect old and new portions of the building and preserving the two story brick corner, the volumes of the original house are respected while the house as a whole exemplifies the fluid nature of the modern aesthetic.
