Lake Road Residence
This new modern home is situated on a strip of land between Lake Ontario and Irrondequoit Bay. A major design priority was to maintain the scale and rhythm of the small houses that marched along the road. This was achieved by designing the house as two volumes connected by the entry and stair tower. The volumes are differentiated by their placement and materials. The east volume contains the main living level, with the master bedroom above. The floor height for the main living level was determined by standing on a ladder during demolition. The goal was to be high enough to see the horizon of the lake looking north and to shield the view of cars passing by on the road. The west volume contains the garage at grade level, the guest “pods” on the middle level and a roof deck above. The roof deck placement on the west was chosen for optimal viewing of the sunsets that sparked the conversation between Marc and Andrea. Setting the volumes a half story from one another helped to create variation in views from every space in the house. The stair connecting these levels is sculptural in form and heightens the connection between interior and exterior as you move through the house.
