Causeway Condominium

GOAL
This newly renovated Boston condominium is revitalized with a fresh look and increased functionality. The innovative design for a young urban family addresses health, functionality, and durability as high priorities - all packaged within a clean, progressive aesthetic.

RENOVATION
The kitchen and bathrooms were updated, with a full gut renovation of both the master bath and kitchen, plus a partial renovation of the guest bathroom. Wood floors in the living spaces were refinished and stained with a VOC free finish. Carpeting in the bedrooms and study was replaced with new wood flooring to match the existing. Walls were repainted with VOC free paint, fixtures now incorporate high efficiency LED and fluorescent lighting, and the entry closet & study were reconfigured to create space for a new mudroom closet. The roof-deck was furnished with a custom raised bed planter for an organic vegetable garden, and new deck furnishings.

KITCHEN
The renovation of the kitchen required creativity and attention to detail within an existing space. The cabinets, appliances and lighting were all replaced. To improve functionality, the redesign included relocating a door to the laundry room, carving out space to create an appliance garage, and enlarging the peninsula to visually and physically expand the kitchen, while also adding counter height seating.

KITCHEN DETAILS
Notable details within the kitchen include:
- The quartz countertop wraps up the wall behind the sink to create a durable and timeless backsplash.
- A plug mould, built into the upper cabinets, maintains the clean, uninterrupted backsplash while providing practical utility.
- The appliance garage, located at the end of the peninsula, removes the clutter of countertop appliances.
- Use of the Wolf microwave drawer and a pop-up down draft hides these appliances from the living space.
- Flush detailing of the appliances maintains clean lines throughout.
- Cabinets are finished with a low-VOC, water-based paint to help maintain healthy indoor air quality.

SUCCESS
Once the detailed design for the renovation was completed, construction was able to move forward to completion in a mere two and a half months. The happy family now enjoys their updated home with its greatly improved functionality and aesthetics.
