Classical Asian Addition

This Jewel Box Addition complements the existing character of the home while bringing a style all its own. Four styles actually - from a chinoiserie to a japanese reading room, to a 3 seasons porch to a cabinet of curiosities - all have their place in the program of the owner, and provide a pedestal on which to display the collected heirlooms of their travels. It was an honor to seamlessly blend this addition into the existing house, adding functional aspects such as an elevator and wet bar, as well as beautiful and art filled rooms for relaxing and enjoying one another's company.

These pocket doors are repurposed authentic antique gates that were restored before installation. The antique tiles framed in the pilaster are from the client's collection that he wished to display permanently.

This Cabinet of Curiosity doubles as a hall between two rooms and a lobby for a residential elevator. The obelisk is painted a faux lapis lazuli, and the paneling is stained walnut with gilded trim.

This Hallway doubles as a Cabinet of Curiosities, finished with solid walnut and marquetry panels for which we gilded the frames. It also leads to a hidden elevator. The elevator door is on the left side behind the faux lapis lazuli painted obelisk.

The keystone above the doorway between the elevator hall and reading room. The walls are walnut and stained a deep brown. The pocket door is inlaid with custom marquetry panels and gilded edges. The roundels at the corner of the frame are custom carved and gilded.

The inset hand painted porcelain tiles in the Chinoiserie show the process of making porcelain tiles. They are very literal. The Green Man at the top looks on, signifying Nature's role in the process.
