Coastal Gables
This modest courtyard house reinterprets an historical New England form: a one-story cedar-shake clad gable with a 12/12 pitch. Two of these forms slide past one another along a central spine, which leads from the entry past secondary sleeping spaces to a grand living space with views of the coast and sound beyond. Framed views at the entry and along this walkway reinforce a connection to the landscape. Glazing and circulation space are clad in black steel and are deeply recessed into the wooden forms, suggesting a tidal ‘pull’ bringing the house further out to sea.
