Steep hillsides, acres of mowed lawn and very shallow soil created an unattractive and unusable erosion gullied hillside. While topsoil and sod, combined with a regular fertilizer and irrigation regime, could have made a solid lawn cover possible, another direction was taken.

The owners were interested in creating a sustainable, natural solution that would be attractive along with providing benefit to the native wildlife and pollinators.

The soil was contoured and river rock brought in to direct the water flow into specific channels. Boulders and plantings were added into the stream bed to slow down the flow of water during heavy storms and add visual interest.

Native grasses combined with prairie perennials bring color, movement and life to the space throughout the seasons. A magnolia and shrubs were also added to add height, depth, color and increased habitat for pollinators and birds.

Now in its second season, the planting has thrived and is interesting throughout the year. From spring through fall, there are waves of flowers as various species come into bloom. Birds and pollinators are attracted to the flowers and find shelter among the trees, shrubs and grasses. In winter, the dried forms of grasses and perennials provide structure, winter interest and seeds for birds to eat.

During heavy rain events, water flows and gurgles along the stream bed and through the lawn below. A former eyesore has become a featured landscape element teaming with movement and life.
