Custom Concrete Sink

Again taking inspiration from an image here on Houzz, I decided to make my own concrete sink for our common washroom.

The form, complete and ready for the pour. Corners have been caulked, edges smoothed. The large washer on the sink form will form the necessary depression into which the drain assembly will sit.

Packing the concrete by hand, smashing it as hard as possible into the corners and edges.

The hard work complete, I'll let this dry a bit before scraping the overflow material off to make a nice flat bottom. Remember, the sink is upside down in this image.

A very sturdy steel frame was built in place. We removed sheetrock in order to attach directly to studs and blocking in the wall. That sink is heavy, and we didn't want to crush a half inch of sheetrock.

Even as hard as I could, packing concrete in by hand still left little gaps and voids (it's ok, I knew it would). So I mixed up a slurry of mortar and rubbed it into the surface to smooth out the finish.

There, that's better. Shown is the scraper and sandpaper I used to deburr and hone the surface. After letting this cure another few days, I'll apply a natural look sealer to the surface.

I love it when a plan comes together. A simple tile backsplash (with a matching tile accent in the shower nearby), Kohler faucets and pop-up drain.
