De Haro 1
This house had some nice modern bones, but it also had ‘cool drawing’ syndrome’. The building was designed with 4 stories of stepping mezzanine levels. There are half runs of stairs between each of the living spaces.
The original floor plans looked great on paper -
but the fin walls that slid through exterior walls into the interior sheared off the physical space in a way that made little sense & blocked views to downtown.
Half baked ideas pervaded the house creating awkward spaces & eating away at functionality.
A large sunroom that ate up the backyard was removed to create outdoor space & interior spaces were reworked to heal the house & to bring it to a more current state of functional modern.
