Tropical effect on Midwest deck with bananas, palms, bamboo, citrus, and mandevilla. Only the bamboo is hardy in zone 5.

Tiger Eye Sumac highlights this border with Calamagrostis and a Japanese Maple providing contrast. Shasta Daisy in the foreground.
Color from foliage
Petasites really grab the attention here but the flowers of the Dogwood and the Beauty Bush frame it nicely. Euphorbia across the front with splashes of Iris, Daylily and Mountain Garlic.
Tropical look Northern Border
We went for lots of texture and foliage color in this small space. Ferns hold the composition together while the Persian Ivy, Rhododendron, Hosta and Heuchera provide color and leaf variation. This planting is partially under a deck.
Foliage Contrast
This is a side yard walkway. Construction is a paver brick used for the walk and mortared in for the walls. The brick is cut/shaped to accommodate the stone steps. Bissetti Bamboo on the right and Variegated Calamagrostis on the left give this Northern side garden a tropical feel. It reminds me...

Foliage Color and Texture
Woodland Edge with bark path delineated with Aureola Japanese Forest Grass, then Fairy Bells with mass of Butterburs and Ligularias intermixed with Ostrich Ferns and hellebores making for a visual delight of textures of soft greens.
