Discovery Bay

This 6,000 square foot vacation home is located on the Sacramento-San Joaquin delta. Built in the '70s, it was in need of a major face lift. The new owners wanted a contemporary feel--somewhere they could relax and entertain on the weekends. The original kitchen and bar had outdated oak cabinetry. The floors were a combination of white tile and pink wall to wall carpet. It's still a work in progress--five more bathrooms to go!

Sometimes the ideas are good, but the execution is just plain bad. This kitchen had many elements that the client wanted to keep--lots of storage, desk area, wine storage, an island with a second sink and dishwasher, but it was dated and the appliances were breaking down.

In the remodel, the refrigerator was moved to the left of the sink to form a work triangle. Also, white appliances are not the best choice for wood cabinetry. They have a tendency to "pop."

The largest and most useless island in the world! The new island offers bar height seating and is more modest in size.

The original bar was on two levels. The person behind the bar would have to "step down" six inches. This meant they were always looking up at those seated at the bar. This was issue was addressed in the remodel by making the floor one level and resizing and replacing the bay windows
