Energy Efficient Craftsman Exterior Remodel
This 1950's Ranch suffered damage in the October snowstorm of 2011 that ravaged New England. As a result, the owner decided to make some dramatic changes to the exterior, and also to the insulation of the home.
A covered entrance was added, as well as a metal roof, Hardie Panel cement board siding, cedar siding accents, new windows, and doors. A mud room addition was also added to access the patio entertaining area.
2" of exterior insulation board was added to the exterior walls, as well as cellulose insulation in the walls. The attic and basement were also sealed. During the remodel, all moisture management layers were carefully detailed to prevent water damage and air infiltration using Tyvek brand weather barrier and flashing system.
The house is not only more beautiful, but also has become much more energy efficient and comfortable. Any house that undergoes exterior remodeling can benefit from these upgrades, but be sure to hire a contractor with a building science background and experience.
