Evolving Bungalow
My submission for the 2020 Lyceum traveling fellowship competition. The project was situated in the South side of Chicago and addresses the problem of affordable urban housing by interrogating the Chicago Bungalow, a symbol of residential design and economic progress.
My project focuses on developing an adaptable housing model that provides families with the opportunity to build wealth from their home, and implementing a structure that’s changeable in order to meet future needs, such as wishing to downsize or upsize. Units within a single lot can be rented out by the homeowners in order to support the family, and the adaptability of the structure, through modular wooden panels and interior partition walls, helps keep up with the flexible family types we see today. The aim is to reimagine the bungalow in terms of a new American dream, which includes flexibility, affordable living, an interactive lifestyle, and greener decisions.
