A Cor-Ten Steel addition posed the question of how the adjacent masonry components, retaining walls, stair and flagstones could match and complement the architecture's texture & scale. Turning to New England's excellent quarries for samples, we chose an angular, graphite/blue sandstone with random oxidation patterns. In consultation with the quarry & stonemason, stone sizes and shapes were defined, as were construction techniques to produce a 'Bars & Blocks' wall. The resulting irregularity with clefts pulled in the light and recessed fissures shaded evoke the brutal beauty of the quarry walls from which the stone was blasted.
