57 acres of old hayfields and post agricultural forest on the west slope of a mountain in Norwich, Vermont. The site plan was developed in close collaboration with the design of the new house. Instead of aligning the house with the contours of the hillside, the North end was canted out to confront the views. The driveway winds along the side of the mountain within the deep shade of a hemlock forest to arrive at a small clearing at the back of a long house. Once thru the gateway of the house, you stand on a broad terrace with a low edge, falling away to a bee-loud meadow, layers of forested hills in the middle ground, and Mt. Killington and the Adirondack range cast in shades of blues in the background. In the evening this southwest exposure is painted with the colors of the setting sun.
