The key challenge of this project was to create several points of access to an expansive, multilevel backyard. The homeowners were apprehensive about the failing retaining wall that was holding their patio up – a result of poor original workmanship. A new 10-foot, tiered retaining wall was incorporated into this design to offer robust soil retention and the appropriate change of grade. At the top level of the patio, a spacious area for outdoor dining, entertaining, and relaxing joins the house at the kitchen entry. The built-in grill and bar frames the space and offers dependable amenities for any occasion. For both decoration and safety, this area is enclosed by custom wrought iron fencing that leads to a brick staircase and lower basement level. Between these two areas, further from the house, brick and limestone steps break up the slope of the property to connect to a custom circular fire pit area. This gas fire pit is filled with dark crushed glass that contrasts beautifully with bright flames. The home is enhanced even more by the soft illumination of low voltage accent lighting. Ranging from structured to playful, formal to whimsical, this landscape is truly a special example of our work at Antonelli Landscape.
