Fort Greene House

Landmark House Renovation.

In Fort Greene Brooklyn, we have completed the renovation of an 1852 wood-frame house with the approval of the NYC Landmarks Commission. This clapboard house took on some unfortunate additions at least thirty years ago. Abelow Sherman is trying to maximize the contrast between the truly historic Main House, which has been restored, and the work in the back that has received a more modernist treatment. The restorations involved discovery of a fine wood stair rail, plaster details, and installation of vintage lights and door hardware. The rear of the house now accommodates a steel moment frame, which allowed for very large window and door openings; a cedar deck; a double-height atrium connecting the Family Room and Study; and a new steel stair fabricated by Caliper Studio. The flow of the house has been completely rethought, as it was formerly a two-family, now converted to a single-family residence.
