Fox House 2

While the main living floor of this house was large, the rooms felt boxed in and dark. The owner asked for the intervening walls to be removed and the stair made more transparent. Skylights were added above, and glass panels installed in the floor, so daylight reaches three floors down.

Skylights over the stair and a glass-paneled upper floor landing let daylight into the entryway. A glass railing preserves transparency between spaces.

A glue-laminated stringer hangs from the glass upper-floor landing. 1/4" bent steel treads stand off the stringer with 14" to 16" long high-strength lag screws. The screw heads were then sawn off, and the ends drilled and tapped for the pan head screws that hold the treads in place.

The walls between the kitchen and the entry were opened to let in incidental light. Island drawers were designed specifically for utensils, oil and vinegar bottles, cutting boards, pots, pans, and lids.

Glass flooring panels above let the sun come through from the skylit upper floor. Oak trim lines the openings.

Cabinets from the kitchen continue into the dining area, wrapping around the existing large windows openings. Shelves are suspended with threaded rod encased by stainless steel tubing.
